Through the Forest Agriculture Sustainable Trade (FAST) Project, Indonesia’s cocoa sector is entering a new chapter. In collaboration with UNDP Indonesia and the Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI) - PT Riset Perkebunan Nusantara (RPN) aims to turn Indonesia’s cocoa potential into lasting global impact.
The Forest Agriculture Sustainable Trade (FAST) Initiative is a transformative effort designed to redefine the cocoa value chain. Anchored at the crossroads of sustainable agriculture, forest conservation, and equitable trade, FAST drives meaningful change for farming communities while protecting our planet’s natural ecosystems. Launched by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in collaboration with PT Riset Perkebunan Nusantara – Indonesian Coffee and Cocoa Research Institute (ICCRI), this initiative champions a future where sustainability and prosperity grow hand in hand.
We aims to strengthen Indonesia’s cocoa sector through :
The 7th Highest Cocoa Production in the World
Initial coordination with key stakeholders followed by direct visits to cocoa-growing areas to understand on-ground conditions, challenges, and opportunities.
Comprehensive data collection across major cocoa-producing regions to map current practices, assess farmer needs, and identify gaps within the value chain.
Developing and equipping local trainers with essential knowledge and skills to support farmers in implementing sustainable and competitive cocoa practices.
Collaborative workshop with government and sector partners to discuss, refine, and propose policy improvements that strengthen Indonesia’s cocoa ecosystem.
The FAST Project is conducting field surveys in key cocoa regions to gather insights from farmers, collectors, traders, and industry players.
Lampung (Sumatra) – Surveys conducted in several villages across sub-district in Pesawaran, Lampung Tengah, Lampung Timur known for smallholder farms and agroforestry systems
Central Sulawesi – Indonesia’s leading cocoa-producing region, covering several villages across Poso, Parigi Mutong, Sigi, Donggala, where production volumes and cooperative activities are highly concentrated.
East Kalimantan – An emerging cocoa hub, with surveys in multiple cocoa-growing villages in Kutai Timur and Berau, and stakeholder consultations in Samarinda, reflecting ongoing revitalization efforts and farmer regeneration programs.
